Restaurants: Creating Worldwide Appeal and a Sense of Home

When you travel, it feels as if there are two worlds: your home and the rest of the world. When you step into a restaurant, this feeling is echoed, and it changes based on which restaurant you are in. Right around the corner from home, a restaurant may feel like you are in Thailand eating pad Thai, in America enjoying a cheese burger or in France eating snails. In other cases, you may be half way around the globe in a spot full of Aussies that makes you feel like you are back home. Hi, my name is Betina, and I love eating out and travelling. This blog looks at everything related to those concepts. It talks about the sense of home and away in restaurants. Whether you are a diner or a restaurateur, I hope you enjoy the diverse posts I include in this blog.

Tips on running a killer restaurant

by Melinda Lawson

From the moment a customer walks in a restaurant, every detail that happens thereafter counts. Creating a successful restaurant is not an easy venture, it requires hard work and dedication. So if you want to start your own eating place or convert your restaurant to a profit making business, then here are some great tips to do this.

 Mind your location and staff

These are some of the two greatest success markers in the restaurant business. You need to plan your location and your staff. If these two don't complement, then you'll be cooking a pot full of drama.

The location should be in a high traffic area and readily accessible by the public. Look at the most successful restaurants, they've all got the perfect locations.

The staff has to be good. Create a crew of people who are fun to be around with and you'll be having customers on your door every minute. Remember, people don't just go to restaurants for the food, they want to have a memorable time. Otherwise they could have just ordered a delivery.

Keep your menus simple but mouth watering

Your menu is what people are mainly after. Contrary to popular belief, you need to keep it simple. Yes, simple. Pages and pages of menus gives your restaurant a sophisticated first impression but it'll come back and bite you if you're not careful. You see with simplicity, you'll be able to focus on the meals that really matter and make them much more delicious than your competitors. Once you try to please everyone and offer all the meals under the sun, then you won't make the best out of them. You won't even be capable of acquiring the freshest ingredients when you've got our focus so diverse.

Pay attention to the details

Ensure your staff properly serves their customers. If it's the napkins, ensure they are served in numbers, don't limit them to one. The number of forks and spoons should be precise depending on the meal ordered. One of the worst things you can do to business is have your customers track the waiter for things that should be readily available. Put yourself in the mind of the customer. Are there any hurdles along the way? Solve them fast.

Capture the attention of people

You're running a restaurant and its success is determined by the number of people who walk through your door. Use your creativity and organise events to capture the attention of the public and press. An event like an eating contest could grab the attention of many.
